Using a Generation 4 Jimny
This is really the unofficial owners manual, I guess. It’s the place where I will put the tips/tricks/handy hints as well as some lesser known stuff that people might not realise. You get enough questions asked about things like engaging 4WD or even how to get to the menu in the gauge cluster that it’s easier to write it down once formally rather than answering questions individually.
Official owners manuals are available online:
- 3 door owners manual for Australia
(this also applies to ‘rest of world’ too) - 5 door owners manual for Australia
(I assume this matches the higher specification 5 door cars elsewhere too)
This page is also a stub for the little sub pages:
- Tyre pressures
Short answer is 26 psi front and rear, only up to 29 psi in the rear if you’re absolutely fully loaded. This is one of those questions asked so often that I’ve got a much deeper dive than just the owner’s manual level of info.
More broadly: cars legally have to have a tyre placard somewhere on them, which includes the information on the recommended pressures. It’s a good idea to stick to these.
Yes, even if you have upgraded your wheels and tyres you probably benefit from sticking to stock pressures. Larger tyres may need less air, not more, contrary to what people might think or say at a tyre shop. - Setting up the car using the central screen
Want to know how to change the fuel economy units, set up how the fuel economy is reset or even how the automatic lights operate when you stop driving the car or you unlock it before getting in? These, and a couple of other things, are hidden in the central gauge cluster screen setup menu. - Bosch 7″ infotainment use
While not the best head unit, here’s some info on the Bosch 7″ audio unit (the one that includes inbuilt GPS navigation independent to your phone via CarPlay/Android Auto).
I’m doing this now as I’m about to upgrade the head unit, so easier to go through and document it before I chuck it in the bin. - Engaging and using 4wd
With fewer and fewer cars using a very basic part-time 4wd system like the Jimny uses, you do get a few questions on engaging and using 4wd.
