Aftermarket suspension options

This is not really a buyer guide, as I provide that in my recommended mods article, but also to provide a collection of the state of play of parts required or provided with different suspension lift options. I haven’t catalogued everything but this gives me a quick reference for a lot of the individual components.

Many of these kits will require you to order through a dealer for that particular brand anyway, so this is more for the DIYer or for someone looking to mix and match parts. It’s also somewhat of a reference for consumables like shock bushes and the like as things wear out.

Obviously I can’t catalogue everything either, and there’s plenty of brands I know less about, but I’ll keep chipping away at this to add more details. Many of the parts catalogues are locked up behind dealer portals and things but I wanted to have a consistent reference for what each brand uses/considers essential/offers.

Apio

Apio, from Japan, have a couple of suspension lift kits though generally these will be bought through Western resellers.

20 mm – 7420SA

The smallest of the lifts provided by Apio, this kit includes

  • Replacement 20 mm taller springs
  • Replacement 14-way adjustable shock absorbers
  • Headlight levelling arm extension

40 mm – 7440Ti

This kit includes:

  • Replacement 40 mm taller springs
  • Replacement 14-way adjustable extended length shock absorbers
  • Caster correction via offset bushes
  • Adjustable front and rear panhard rods
  • Extended brake hoses

ARB

Unlike many brands, ARB vary shock absorbers for different spring rates, so note the difference in spring rates. They also offer a panhard relocation mount for the back to help with handling. Unlike some other brands, they don’t require brake lines with their 40 mm lift, but they do offer some relocation mount kits for the rear to make sure there’s no brake line to shock contact.

Bilstein

Not a true lift kit per se, but people do ask about these shocks.

Standard height

Front gas shocks: 24-327329
Less droop travel than stock, but also shorter compressed length.

Front B6 monotube shocks: BE5 6062
These are a bit longer in compressed length than stock but probably still ok. Some Bilstein shocks have internal bump stops so this is worth investigating.

Rear gas shocks: 24-327336
Very similar travel to stock shocks

Rear B6 monotube shocks: BE5 6063
Almost identical travel to stock shocks

Raised height

Front gas shocks: 24-321730
Quite similar to travel for stock JB74 shocks but supposedly intended for slight lift (0-40mm?)

Rear gas shocks: 24-321747
Has more droop travel. Also intended for slight lift (0-40mm?)

Some resellers of Jimny parts offer a supposed Bilstein kit, which is based around the above raised height shock absorbers and some H&R springs that offer up to 40 mm lift (Usually SUJI2SF40 for RHD vehicles). As H&R are a sister company for Bilstein I’ll allow it. These kits also include extended brake lines, and optional caster correction via offset bushes. However, these kits don’t seem to provide for spacing down the front crossmember, which might indicate the droop travel is lower than typical 40-50 mm lift shocks.

Some other Jimny parts resellers also offer additional components out of the Fulcrum Formula 4×4 kit, for an alternative option.

Black Raptor Jimny Bits

These are bought through Jimny Bits in the UK.

These are sold differently to many other kits since you effectively order them from the guy who pieces it all together, and so you select components on the website rather than picking from product numbers etc.

All three lift heights (2″, 3″ and 4″) come with a range of shock absorbers:

  • Standard: silver, gas shock absorbers
  • Stealth: same as standard but black
  • Sport: 20% stiffer dampening characteristics
  • Premium: oil only shock with 16 adjustable damping settings

2″

Includes:

  • Shocks according to the kit you order
  • Springs (RHD or LHD)
  • Braided HEL brake lines (choice of colour)
  • Replacement dropped crossmember

Optional:

  • Headlight bracket (required for 3 door LED headlight cars)
  • Caster correction bushes (either SuperPro or Black Raptor branded)

3″

Includes:

  • Shocks according to the kit you order
  • Springs (RHD or LHD)
  • Braided HEL brake lines (choice of colour)
  • Replacement high clearance crossmember (does not reduce ground clearance like dropped ones)
  • 4x caster corrected cold-drawn steel radius arms, with choice of bushes (e.g. Black Raptor or OE Suzuki rubber bushes)
  • 2x cold-drawn steel adjustable panhard rods
  • Extended bump stops front and rear
  • Swaybar relocation bracket
  • 2x propshaft spacers
  • Cable support bracket

Optional:

  • Headlight bracket (required for 3 door LED headlight cars)
  • Replace propshaft spacers with heavy-duty propshafts

4″

Includes same parts as 3″ lift, but suited for a 100mm/4″ lift instead.

Des-Sol

Des-Sol, hailing from South Africa, provide a variety of options for a 50 mm lift kit, plus components for some larger lifts.

They have revised their lifts away from Gabriel sourced shock absorbers and now offer a local to South Africa manufactured shock absorber model termed EV1. This is available in a range of damping styles. All of these shock absorbers are remote reservoir style.

50 mm

The 50 mm options are a mixture of choice of spring type (linear or progressive) and levels of components included (named pack 2, 3 or 4). All lifts can be specified for 3 or 5 door Jimnys, indicating a variety of spring rates can be provided.

Pack 2 lifts include:

  • Shock absorbers and brackets for mounting remote reservoirs
  • Springs (either progressive or linear depending on choice)
  • Caster correction via offset 2.5º bushes
  • Extended vacuum hoses
  • Extended front and rear brake hoses
  • Revised front crossmember, with a notch rather than lowering it as the approach to improve propshaft clearance
  • Headlight levelling sensor bracket

Pack 3 lifts add adjustable panhard rods front and rear.

Pack 4 lifts then further add replacement radius arms for the front only.

Similar parts to 40 mm lift, just differ in springs and shocks. Dobinsons don’t recommend caster corrected radius arms for this height lift, but they are probably wise to add at this level of lift so would require sourcing elsewhere.

75 mm 5 door

Identical in parts to the 3 door 75 mm lift. Since the 5 door is heavier, the use of the same springs will mean that it is a lower lift in a 5 door than in a 3 door. Also note that Dobinsons don’t recommend caster corrected radius arms for this height lift but my experience is you will not get sufficient caster just using offset bushes at this height.

EFS

Note that EFS lifts may require longer brake lines and/or accommodation around ABS wiring brackets (and presumably front vacuum hoses for automatic hubs). EFS do not sell any of these products so would need to be sourced elsewhere. EFS also offer replacement standard height shock absorbers.

Standard height

Front standard height shock absorbers are available as part number 36-5481 and rears 36-5482. These are used in the 30 mm kit as well. An upgraded steering damper is also available, part SD4031, which is optional in all 3 lifted height options that EFS offer.

H&R

H&R, a German spring company, have a sister relationship with Bilstein but also offer products combined with other brands such as Koni. Alongside the springs they produce (and kits with matched shock absorbers), H&R also manufacture a 30 mm diameter swaybar for the front of the Jimny (part 33678-1).

45 mm lowering springs

H&R part number 28678-1 are 45 mm lowering springs for the Jimny. This can also be bought paired with shock absorbers as part 28678-2.

20 mm raising springs

H&R part number 28649-1 are 20 mm taller springs for the Jimny. These can be combined with Koni Heavy Track series shock absorbers as H&R part number 1300-1001.

These springs are equal lengths for each corner (to suit LHD applications). A 10-15 mm spring spacer is recommended for RHD applications to balance out the car.

40 mm raising springs

JimnyStyle in the UK used H&R to manufacture specific 40 mm raised progressive rate springs for the Jimny. There are 3 options for these: RHD, LHD, and LHD for higher rear load applications. JimnyStyle don’t publish the part number for these but H&R Australia do for the RHD springs. They are part 1-SUJI2SF40 for the RHD +40 mm springs.

HKS

-35 mm

This kit (Hipermax G+ Low Down: 80270-AS002) lowers the car 30-35 mm. It includes the following parts:

  • Replacement shock absorbers front and rear, 30 levels of damping adjustment
  • Front and rear coil springs

Front springs are changed to 21 N/mm per side, and average rear spring rate per spring is 19.5 N/mm.

+25 mm

This kit (Hipermax G+ Lift Up: 80270-AS004) raises the car 20-25 mm. The following parts are provided:

  • Replacement shock absorbers front and rear, 30 levels of damping adjustment
  • Front and rear coil springs
  • Bump stop extensions for rear

Front springs are changed to 22.5 N/mm per side, and average rear spring rate per spring is 19.5 N/mm.

HM4x4

Another manufacturer who doesn’t break down their lift kits by individual components, HM4x4 supply components out of their home country of Italy with a few options.

Standard height upgrade

If you are after a standard height suspension upgrade then this kit provides you with replacement progressive rate springs and appropriate shock absorbers to suit.

40 mm via spacers/extensions

This kit takes a very different route to many others. It retains your original shock absorbers and springs, but adds height through spring spacers and shock absorber extensions. By using the shock absorber extensions, the factory shock absorbers are sitting at their regular position in their travel like they would standard, just everything is taller.

Includes 4 spring spacers, two rear shock absorber relocation brackets and two upper shock extensions for the front. As the extension is 40 mm, it shouldn’t require relocation of the front crossmember or front brake lines, but there is also no provision of headlight levelling sensor changes or the left-hand rear brake line which is often the limiting factory when adding the droop travel that this kit would.

50 mm

There are three options at this height: step 1, step 2 and step 3.

Step 1 includes only 50 mm taller shock absorbers and progressive springs. Springs can be selected for carrying a winch or no additional front load, and also either soft (for maximum offroad flex), standard with a similar spring rate to standard, or reinforced to add rear spring stiffness for load carrying.

Step 2 adds to this caster correction via offset bushes, bump stop extensions front and rear, extended brake lines, an extended headlight levelling sensor rod, and adjustable panhard rods.

Step 3 then further deletes the offset caster bushes and adds replacement radius arms front and rear for caster and driveline angle correction plus prop shaft spacers for reducing driveline vibration. Radius arms have polybushes for the axle end and pillowball style bushings for the chassis end. Mention is also made of panhard relocation mounts: note that HM4x4 only offer a left hand drive compatible panhard relocation mount for the front so this would need to be considered.

Note that no mention is made of crossmember relocation with any of these kits, presumably either requiring you to buy it separately or just remove the 3rd crossmember instead. HM4x4 have a replacement crossmember that goes above the front propshaft but it only suits manual Jimnys.

80 mm

Only available in ‘step 3’ guise, the 80 mm lift from HM4x4 includes:

  • Replacement progressive springs with the same winch/no winch and soft/standard/reinforced stiffnesses;
  • Replacement shock absorbers
  • Adjustable panhard rods
  • Panhard mount relocation for front and rear
  • Brake lines, front and rear
  • Replacement front and rear radius arms with pillowball chassis end bushes
  • Extended bump stops
  • Headlight levelling sensor adjustment
  • Propshaft spacers for front and rear

Ironman

The Ironman 50mm lift is available as a GVM upgrade for 3 door cars, with different part numbers for different situations:

  • Pre registration variable load: SUZ010BKGGV
  • Pre registration constant load: SUZ010CKGGVM
  • Post registration variable load: SUZ010BKGGVM1

The GVM upgrade consists of their relevant suspension components, same as bought for non GVM upgrades.

There is an approval number for a pre-registration GVM upgrade for 5 door Jimnys to 1800 kg or 2000 kg, but no further information beyond this is available.

50 mm 3 door

Entire suspension kit is sold as the following part numbers:

  • Variable load: SUZ010BKG
  • Constant load: SUZ010CKG

These kits contain required components, but not optional components like caster correction bushes.

50 mm 5 door

Currently Ironman do not seem to provide an individual product listing for 5 door Jimnys. This might be released whenever the long-awaited GVM upgrade is released to market. However, as they run some of the highest spring rates, 10 mm spring spacers all around would make a 3 door kit the same ride height when fitted to a 5 door.

King Springs

  • Front: KSFR-63
  • Rear: KSRR-64

20 mm 5 door

  • Front: KSFR-65
  • Rear: KSRR-66

50 mm

The 50 mm height increase King springs are not provided in any of their online catalogues, but they are referenced in the documentation for the Fulcrum lift for the 3 door. It is likely that they also use different King Springs for the 5 door lift but I have not seen reference to those part numbers anywhere.

  • Front: KSFR-500
  • Rear: KSRR-501

Of an unknown height when used on a JB74 are the coils for 3rd generation Jimnys: KSFR-36H (f) and KSRR-37H (r). These were also available as KSFR-36EH (f) and KSRR-37EH (r) for higher load/height applications. Height is probably more than the 20 mm for regular King springs, so might be 40-50 mm.

Koni

Hard to call this a kit but Koni are a common suspension upgrade option for shock absorbers, and sometimes are paired with some King or H&R springs for a Jimny suspension upgrade with a minor to moderate lift included.

Standard to raised height

Released in the Heavytrack series, the following Koni shock absorbers fit the Jimny:

  • Front: 82-2646
  • Rear: 82 2647

These give a small increase in droop travel while also improving the ride quality through better damping characteristics. They are stated to suit up to a 20 mm height increase, roughly matching the increased droop travel.

These can be bought as a combination with the H&R 20 mm height increase springs as H&R part number 1300-1001.

Outback Armour

One height, two options for each of the lifts for each of the 3 and 5 door models.

50 mm 3 door

As a complete kit this is available in a number of forms. There are two front options:

  • OASU913100T, which is for an unlaiden front; and
  • OASU913100E which is for a laiden front bullbar +/- winch

These options at the front are driven by spring choice only.

For the rear there are 4 options, effectively unlaiden and laiden and normal or extended travel:

  • OASU923100T: unlaiden rear,
  • OASU923101T: unlaiden rear with extended travel,
  • OASU923100E: laiden rear around 100 kg with normal travel; and,
  • OASU923101E: laiden rear with 100 kg with extended travel.

The rear choice comes down to both springs and shock absorber choice.

There’s a range of options in the Masterpiece 3″ lift kits: you have your choice of Monroe shock absorbers with valving by Masterpiece (GS-S204); Masterpiece’s springs with Tough Dog 60/80 mm shocks (GS-S200) or using Rancho RS9000XL long travel shocks (GS-S230). Springs are 22.5 N/mm front springs, 21.5 N/mm rear springs. They also resell the Tough Dog 80 mm kit (which they describe as having slightly stiffer springs than their springs, probably underselling the spring rate change a bit) as GS-S244.

You can also buy kits with optional radius arm changes, which replaces caster bushes with radius arms to suit the lift

Two options for two different things (shocks and choice of radius arms) to give 4 combinations. Shock wise you pick from long travel Monroe or even longer travelling Tough Dog shocks; arms are either stainless steel or steel, with the steel option being a ‘traction link’ design for more rear articulation.

Kits have unique part numbers for the combination:

  • Monroe shock, steel arms: GS-S280
  • Monroe shock, stainless arms: GS-S266
  • Tough Dog shock, steel arms: GS-S281
  • Tough Dog shock, stainless arms: GS-S273

Mike’s Shock Shop

Going to give Mike’s Shock Shop a shout out for their lifts around King Shocks or Fox Shocks for the Jimny. I can’t report much on these, but they can do a standard height option, a 2″ or a 3″ option. Some components are from other kits (e.g. Tough Dog adjustable panhard rods) but if you are after these shocks then these would be the guys to speak to in Australia.

Showa Garage

20 mm

This lift comes in two forms: standard and plus.

Standard contains 4 20 mm spring spacers, rear shock absorber mount relocations to space the shock absorber and one brake hose to deal with the added droop.

Plus adds caster correction via offset bushes and rear panhard mount relocation bracket to the standard lift.

30 mm

There are three versions of this lift: standard, plus or premium.

Standard are 4 replacement springs that are 30 mm longer and also slightly stiffer than standard, rear shock absorber mount relocations to add droop, and a single rear brake hose. Caster correction and LED headlight sensor mount relocations are options to this lift.

Plus adds rear panhard mount relocation bracket and caster correction to the default parts in the standard lift. The LED headlight sensor mount relocation is an option for this lift for 3 door cars with automatic headlight levelling.

The premium kit adds 4 14-way adjustable shock absorbers to the plus kit; once again the headlight sensor relocation bracket is included as an option for this kit for 3 door cars that need it.

50 mm

Just as for the 30 mm kit, this height also has three specifications in standard, plus and premium.

Standard kit comes with 14-way adjustable shock absorbers, progressive rate springs which can be trimmed at the solid top part to adjust height, ABS wire relocation bracket, left-hand rear brake hose bracket, and all four corners of the car get extended brake hoses.

To this the plus kit adds 5º offset caster bushes, swaybar mount relocation kit and shorter swaybar end links, plus also rear panhard mount relocation bracket. Neither the plus nor the standard kit come with a relocated crossmember solution so would require deletion of the crossmember or a separately sourced crossmember with high clearance or spaced down mounts.

Finally, the premium kit adds a crossmember drop kit for the 3rd crossmember plus also adjustable front and rear panhard rods (suited for RHD or LHD cars).

All kits have the option of adding an extended arm for the headlight leveller on 3 door cars with automatic levelling LED headlights.

75 mm

As we’ve come to expect from these kits, this height also comes in standard, plus and premium options.

Standard includes the 14 way adjustable shock absorbers from the 50 mm kit, longer coil springs that can also be cut to length for fine tuning height, extended brake hoses, ABS wiring and left-hand rear brake hose mount relocations, and rear shock absorber relocation kit.

Plus then includes rear panhard mount relocation kit for roll centre adjustment, swaybar relocation kit and also shorter end links, plus 5º offset caster bushes for caster correction.

The premium kit adds a high clearance crossmember solution and adjustable front and rear panhard rods (also suited to either left or right hand drive applications).

For all kits, as per the 50 mm kit, the headlight levelling arm correction for 3 door cars with LED headlights is an optional extra.

Taniguchi

Taniguchi are a Japanese brand with significant Jimny experience and offer a range of suspension products. They do not really list these with part numbers so instead I’ll go through the major points of difference between the parts provided for the three heights they offer (20 mm, 40 mm and 60 mm), plus also the different options within these particular heights.

A number of these supporting parts have been developed with other Japanese brands.

20 mm

Two options at this height: standard or premium. Both come with progressive-rate springs and 14-way adjustable shock absorbers, plus a full set of brake lines. The addition with the premium kit is a rear panhard mount relocation bracket to change the rear roll centre, and one set of offset bushes to add 2.5º of caster for more stable steering. Spring rates will be noted below in my combined table once I’ve catalogued all of the suspension, though it is currently held in my suspension installation article at the bottom.

In addition to the parts included in either option, you are required to either remove the 3rd crossmember or replace it with an option that improves clearance to the front propshaft. Taniguchi also sells this but it is not available in any of the kits.

If you wish to run this with a bullbar you would also need front spring spacers to add preload to support the higher weight.

40 mm

Three options at this height: standard, plus or premium.

Standard includes progressive springs, 14 way adjustable shock absorbers that are longer than the 20 mm kit, and a set of 4 extended brake hoses. To this the plus kit adds 5º offset bushes for caster correction and the rear panhard mount relocation bracket. The premium kit includes everything from the plus kit, but adds extended rear bump stops and adjustable front and rear panhard rods.

As per the 20 mm lift, you either need to remove the 3rd crossmember or replace it with an option to improve propshaft clearance. This is not included in any of the kits but can be bought separately from Taniguchi.

If you wish to run this with a bullbar you would also need front spring spacers to add preload to support the higher weight.

60 mm

Another lift with 3 options at this height: standard, plus or premium.

Standard includes progressive springs, the same 14 way adjustable shock absorbers from the 40 mm kit, and a set of 4 extended brake hoses to suit this lift. Plus adds 5º caster correction bushes, the rear panhard relocation mount and brackets to relocate the swaybar for better on-road handling. To the plus kit the premium kit then adds adjustable front and rear panhard rods.

Just like the other two height options, this kit does not include the crossmember relocation kit or high clearance crossmember. Either you remove the crossmember or you purchase a separately available crossmember kit to provide the propshaft clearance necessary.

If you wish to run this with a bullbar you would also need front spring spacers to add preload to support the higher weight.

The Tough Dog 40 mm lift is available as a GVM upgrade for the 3 door: part number TDGVM-084. This is intended for a minimum additional rear load of 100 kg constantly, and if you are adding a bullbar you need to order the spring spacer separately (TDUK-084, as per other Tough Dog fitments for the Jimny). Can also specify it with panhard rods, steering dampers etc too.

40 mm 5 door

Virtually the same as the 40mm 3 door kit, but with different springs. Rear shocks are different, and note requirement for bump stops and rear radius arm bushing changes on 5 doors. Presumably this relates to potential for propshaft to chassis contact noted on stock 5 doors: by extending the bump stops and adding rear droop you maintain total travel but don’t allow the propshaft to get as close to the chassis. Brake hose kit is also different.

60 mm / 80 mm 3 door

There’s a few required things here compared to smaller lifts. Note there’s also some differences to the 60 mm 5 door lift which is listed below.

Compared to a 40 mm lift:

  • Different springs and shocks, as expected
  • As per 40 mm lift, bullbar is accommodated via spring spacers rather than different spring rates
  • Adjustable panhard rods required to centre axles
  • Different brake hoses
  • Can now get radius arms from Tough Dog, but these radius arms require different crossmember drop brackets

XGS by TJM

A not so fun fact: TJM and Tough Dog share a parent company, but their lifts are different. The XGS lift by TJM is also available as a GVM upgrade for the 3 door Jimnys, but not 5 door Jimnys.

40 mm lift – 3 and 5 door

Nominally one height of 40 mm is available, and it looks like it’s totally shared between 3 and 5 door Jimnys. There’s no one easy to access product catalogue so this has been cobbled together by google searchers.

GVM upgrade requires front shocks 650TTC157X and rear shocks 650TTC257X to be used, no other shocks are compatible with the GVM upgrade.

4xFourART

Much like Black Raptor, for these kits you basically order the kit and it rocks up. While you can buy parts individually, they are not listed as such so it’s easier to just explain what is or isn’t in the various kits. I’ve listed these weirdly as basically the 3″ kit is a variant on the 4″ kit, rather than the 4″ being a taller version of the 3″ kit. They did offer a 2″ kit but it is currently unavailable, but it is essentially shocks, springs, and a rear brake line.

4″

Included:

  • Extended length BECCE shock absorbers
  • 4″ lift height springs
  • Caster corrected radius arms for the front / angle corrected radius arms for the rear
  • All radius arms fitted with pillowball bushings for better offroad flex
  • Propshaft spacers to reduce driveline vibration by correcting driveline angles
  • Extended bump stops
  • Flipped tie rod for better steering geometry
  • Panhard mount relocation brackets
  • Adjustable panhard rods
  • Extended brake lines
  • Extended vacuum lines

Optional:

  • Upgrade to Koni 3 way adjustable shock absorbers

3″

Same inclusions as the 4″ kit, just uses shorter coils for a 3″ static ride height.

Specifications

Spring specifications

Not every manufacturer publishes technical specifications and I’m not made of money to buy all of the lift kits to measure spring rates, so this is as complete as I can make it. Thanks to various Facebook group users who have provided me data on some previously unpublished springs

Note I’m currently doing some reformatting of this to break up the options into different segments to make it a bit easier. I’ll also provide stock springs at the top of every table for comparison purposes.

Piecing together a suspension upgrades

This is really about providing people a recipe for suspension and demystify components included in lifts. I want to hopefully help people understand options e.g. no point buying a lift that won’t suit your need just because you think it ‘has all of the inclusions’. Maybe you don’t need all of them and you’d be happier with a better spring rate or shock absorber selection.

Guiding principles

Not everything is necessary. Need to think about what you’re after. Spring rates and shock characteristics matter.

Recipes

Standard height

Just upgrade shocks: the spring rates are fine.

20 mm

Springs and shocks: you need to remove the shocks to change the springs. If you prize stability then consider offset caster correction bushes which will calm it down on the highway.

40 mm

Caster correction, offset bushes still probably fine. Probably need to think about crossmember relocation. At least LH rear brake hose will need to be changed. You can gain stability by going further with caster correction via replacement radius arms. At this height you should at least bend the ABS/vacuum hose bracket on the front axle for clearance.

50 mm

Offset bushes can start to be insufficient at this height; crossmember relocation is essential. Likely front and rear brake hoses now need to be done. Vacuum hose extensions, relocation of the bracket or more of a bend. Panhard mount relocation at the back can be a good idea for a 3 door for handling. Swaybar relocation/shorter swaybar links.

60-80 mm

Replacement radius arms really start being necessary at this height along with previous changes. Panhard rods are very likely to be needed to keep axles centred. At the point at which you’re doing this you probably also want significantly larger tyres so extended bump stops would be necessary.

100 mm+

Everything as per above, but more mandatory. Need to think about steering geometry, too e.g. toe linkage and stuff.
